I predict the Tigers will give Sheffield one more go-round in the lineup when he returns from his latest injury. After that, I can see how they justify his existence. But what in the hell do you do with a salary like his for a guy who is operating at basically 70 percent, if that?

I had a similar reaction when I saw that headline (I can't say I went ahead and read the column), and initially thought that maybe it would be fair to give Parker for not writing something idiotic, since I'm so quick to point out when he writes something absurd.

But you nailed it. This is such Captain Obvious material. There's no one who didn't raise an eyebrow when the Tigers gave Willis that deal. Sure, signing him to a long-term contract needed to justify the trade with Florida. But how about seeing whether or not he could pitch well with Detroit first?

The fluff column from Mitch Albom, detailing the pain of Willis not being able to control his pitches, is surely on its way.

I think whoever signs bonds would prefer a 'quiet period' in terms of anti-bonds headlines. I'm not sure the tripling of indictments that came out this week helps:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/05/14/SPMF10LVBM.DTL&hw=barry+bonds&sn=001&sc=1000

Again, it has nothing to do with baseball or his ability, but they might be skittish for another month. If Sheffield were to retire before then, maybe its a different story.

Sign Bonds, bat him #3 and DH. The Tigers can get him for around $5 million which is an absolute steal for a guy who's going to be on base more than anyone else on the team. The team can't play small ball or defense anyway so just leave Sheff in left field and hope he starts turning it on. That would give the Tig's lineup like this...

Granderson, CF
Polanco, 2B
Bonds, DH
Ordonez, RF
Cabrera, 1B
Guillen, 3B
Sheffield, LF
Renteria, SS
Rodriguez, C

Inge, Thomas, Raburn, Santiago on the bench.

Bonds to the tigers would be a disaster. Stick a fork in him - he's done. In the current tigers lineup pitchers would pitch to him. In SF teams pitched around him two years after they should have. I think they did this because the rest of the giants sucked so bad. On the tigers opposing pitchers would pound the zone they would get a break with him in the lineup. Without the BALCO Martini he can't catch up to the fastball and he is a liability on the base path. Forget team chemistry–it isn't his personality that will hurt the team–his playing will.
BY the way - I have not seen comments here on the Michigan Man going to OSU. What's the word on Richrod and family values?

My analysis... you are starting to hit your stride too Brunn. Good stuff from the 1st and I like some of the recent call-outs and call-ins. I am pretty much just an average (in terms of knowledge) baseball fan, but the Tiger's bullpen still scares me. I know they have been clamping down the last week and a half or so, but still get the feeling they can get rocked at anytime. Will definitely be "fun" watching that development over the season. Also, post a nice full size picture of yourself (keep it clean of course.) I am going to try to hit a game soon and am going to make a miniature foam cut-out of you and take pictures of you at the game.

Sorry folks, like I said, I cannot provide many insites here... just keeping tabs.

I wasn't playing tag with Zach. I infected Zach with my lethal "rubber arm, steak pitch" virus. It has been slowly spreading through the tigers bullpen and I will infect everyone on the team until I am sent to Toledo. I was even able to infect C.C. Sabathia this week....

Eigth inning rally two nights in a row? Gotta like that, makes me think back to 2006; seems like they had big frequent big finishes that year. And what a difference a game can make. I checked in quickly last night to see them losing 4-3 in the 7th, but signed off thinking "they can pull this out." Diggin the posts John.
